Tell Me More
The De Tomaso Mangusta, produced from 1967 to 1971, was born from a squabble between Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby. De Tomaso wanted Shelby to distribute his cars, but negotiations fell apart.
The Mangusta, meaning "mongoose" in Italian, was rumored to be a dig at Shelby, whose Cobra was the mongoose's natural predator.
Its successor was the De Tomaso Pantera.
A little-known fact: the Mangusta's split rear window design, while visually striking, caused issues. The engine would overheat due to poor ventilation. Owners sometimes propped the rear windows open to combat this.
