Since its introduction in 1963, the 911 has undergone continuous development, although the basic concept has remained little changed.

Throughout its lifetime, the core design has been modified by private teams and by the factory itself for racing, rallying and other forms of competition, and consequently is among the most successful competition cars ever.

Model year 1974 saw three significant changes.

First, the engine size was increased to 2,687cc achieving higher torque.

Second, new impact bumpers conformed with low-speed protection requirements of US regulations.
