BMW Motorsport created the E30-generation M3 to compete in the inaugural 1987 World Touring Car Championship.
Following completion of the model’s initial 5,000-unit production run required by the FIA’s Group A homologation rules in March 1987, BMW Motorsport continued to homologate updated racing technologies for the M3 with 500-unit batches which entered production in 1987, 1988, and 1990, respectively.
Taken altogether, these three successive renditions of the “M3 Evolution” represent the distillation of the model’s wildly successful motorsports pedigree from the championship-winning racecars into limited, thrilling, and highly sought-after sports saloons available to any paying customer of the marque.
