Following on the heels of the tremendously successful Austin-Healey 100-4, the 100-6 series, introduced in September 1956, addressed several critiques common of the earlier model while remaining true to Healey’s "handsome brute" reputation.

A wider, oval-shaped grille with horizontal slats, in conjunction with a functional hood scoop and revised interior, gave the new series a visual upgrade, while a stretched wheelbase, optional overdrive, and modified BMC 2.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine helped boost performance.

Despite the additional emphasis on touring comfort, most notable by the addition of two “occasional” rear jump seats, the 100-6 was still ideal for use, in the words of period advertising, “either in competition or just for a holiday spin.” While more practical for families with small children, many felt that the Austin-Healey lost some of its sporting character by switching to 2+2 configuration.
