Ferrari’s line of 250 GT series of road cars had served the Italian marque admirably, representing significant advancements in automotive manufacturing techniques as engineers in Maranello honed the Berlinetta platform.

Yet by 1963, it was time for Ferrari to evolve the model range and introduce something new.

The 275 GTB—or “Gran Turismo Berlinetta”—was launched at the 1964 Paris Motor Show and drew on the company’s tradition of producing fine road cars that served a dual purpose with racing potential.

With its long front hood and short rear deck, the 275 GTB shared certain likeness to the Ferrari 250 GTO, another iconic design from the company in the early-1960s.

The car featured the final development of the classic single-overhead cam Colombo short-block V-12, while the five-speed gearbox mounted to the rear axle would be the first transaxle used by Ferrari.

Notably, the 275 GTB is also the first road car by Ferrari to feature independent suspension on all four wheels.
