The MGB GT V8, introduced by MG in 1973, was a factory-built, eight-cylinder evolution of the popular MGB GT coupé.
Its creation was inspired by the success of independent conversions that proved the car’s chassis could comfortably handle more power than the standard four-cylinder engine.
MG engineers selected the lightweight Rover 3.5-litre all-aluminium V8 - originally derived from a Buick design - which provided strong performance without overwhelming the car’s balance.
The result was a refined, torquey grand tourer capable of smooth, effortless acceleration and long-distance cruising.
Despite its strengths, the model faced unfortunate timing: fuel crises, insurance concerns, and internal competition within British Leyland limited production to just a few thousand units before it ended in 1976.
Today, the MGB GT V8 is celebrated as one of the most desirable and capable factory MGs ever produced, blending classic British sports-car charm with V8 character and reliability.
