When Vauxhall wanted to add some glamour to its lacklustre early noughties line up, it was able to turn to its GM stablemates Holden and their lusty Monaro coupe.

The Australian marque’s Special Vehicles division had been making the third generation Monaro coupe since 2001 and, on the home market, it came with a choice of a 3.8 litre supercharged V6 or the famous LS1 5.7 litre V8.

Vauxhall sensibly avoided the smaller engine and stuck with a V8 only range in two flavours – the 328 bhp CV8 and the 376 bhp VXR.

With all the power going to the rear wheels and only a basic traction control (which could be switched off), the Monaro was a true muscle car.

The VXR could manage 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds and with 376 lb ft of torque had plenty of grunt to unstick the rear tyres.

A total of 800 Monaros of all types were sold in the UK between 2004 and 2007, making them a rare sight.
