KEY FACTS This Peugeot 309 is reported to be a very usable example of the rare modern classic hot hatch, in the desirable and more potent ‘GTI 16’ guise.

Under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated 1.9-litre ‘XU9J4’ 16-valve inline-four shared with the contemporary 405 Mi16, producing up to 160hp and 190Nm and driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

Just 5,896 units of the ‘GTI 16’ were reportedly produced, and this car also has the rare ‘Cuir package’ (leather seats and black carpets rather than blue), an option which it is estimated was only fitted to 200 cars.

First registered in August 1992, it has been in current ownership for eight months.

This example shows 73,650 km on the odometer, though this is a replacement odometer because the original unit was stolen from the car when it read approximately 100,000 km – and therefore the total mileage is reported to be approximately 173,650 km.
