1960 Austin A40 Farina Ideal use and improve MkI Deluxe saloon; driven some 50 miles to the sale; bill of sale from 1967 Dating from December 1960, this MkI Austin A40 Farina ‘Deluxe’ saloon was designed by Turin styling legends Farina for BMC/Austin and paved the way for the now ubiquitous hatchback when produced in Countryman form.

This example was driven to us by the owner from Birmingham and recently went to West Wales and back on a jolly adventure with him.

Finished in pale blue, the paintwork is unlikely to win any prizes but is presentable enough with a hint of ‘hand-finished’ about it – a good use and improve example that looks solid enough and ran, we gather, well on its way to us.

We moved it about for the images but it was reluctant to remain running on idle – perhaps requiring some tuning? Under the bonnet, we find the 948cc inline-four-cylinder A-series engine producing 34hp and a modest 68NM of torque with four-speed manual transmission.
