Description Current owner 37 years; good running order Launched by BMC in 1958 to replace the bulbous Austin A35, the A40 Farina was a strikingly different car with sharp, modern lines penned by Pininfarina of Italy.
Powered by the trusty A-Series 948cc engine and with a top speed of 80mph, the A40 was a great export success for BMC, even in the USA where it was quaintly marketed as 'The Gayest Economy Sedan Ever'.
Rugged, light and reliable, the A40 was extensively used in competition and has lately had something of a renaissance thanks to historic saloon car racing.
This A40 Farina has a plaque on the dash suggesting that it was supplied by Austin dealers Ross Bros.
Ltd of Ben Rhydding in West Yorkshire although it was first registered in Carmarthenshire in April 1961.
Nothing is known of the early history of the car but our vendor acquired it way back in 1986.
