Intended as replacement for the immensely successful Austin Cambridge, the Maxi was BMC’s first hatchback and the last model designed under the supervision of Sir Alec Issigonis, creator of the Mini.

It was also the first to use BMC’s new overhead-camshaft E-Series engine.

When launched in 1969, the Hydrolastically-sprung Maxi was praised for its ride, handling, spaciousness and versatility, but the under-powered 1.5-litre engine and imprecise cable-operated gearchange were not well liked.

A much improved version debuted at the 1970 Motor Show boasting a 1,748cc engine and rod -operated gearchange.

The original 1.5-litre engine continued to be available alongside the newer 1750 unit until 1980, when it was dropped on the introduction of the face-lifted Maxi 2.

When production ceased in 1981 a total of almost 361,000 Maxis had been built, a far cry from the 250,000 per year that had been anticipated.
