Porsche was contracted to redesign the W124 platform to accommodate the 5.0L V8 engine and associated mechanical components.
The car was manufactured at Mercedes-Benz's Sindelfingen plant and partially assembled at Porsche's Reutter building in Zuffenhausen.
Its successor is the Mercedes-Benz E 50 AMG (W210).
