Referred to as the 964 series, it was a natural evolution over its predecessor and, despite similar visual cues, it was a considerable update that combined the character of the original with a modernised '90s acceptability.
This included the shift to coil springs and the notable addition of ABS.
The car's main feature, aside from the all-new bodywork and overhauled interior, was the new air-cooled engines.
