There's a myth that the Jaguar XJS was supposed to fill in the gap which was left open by the demise of the E-Type.

The 1975 Jaguar XJS was created as a luxury grand-tourer rather than an out-and-out sporting thriller.

Yet, as the years went on, it carved its own niche and became something of a great all-rounder.

One of the important factors that ensured its appeal remained strong over its ~21-year production run the model was the use of high-efficiency engines, but the XJS's main staying power can be attributed to the inclusion of a full convertible option.

Its final iteration arrived in 1991 when the XJS was given its last overhaul, which also included a series of new 4.0-litre straight six engines and the further addition of a full 4-seater convertible.

Further changes were implemented in 1994 and in the following year, the runout versions, known as the Celebration (to celebrate the 60th year of Jaguar Cars) became a fitting tribute to mark the end of production of the XJS.
