Round headlights harked back to the much-loved 993, but the engineering underneath was anything but nostalgic.
Two flat-six engines were offered from the start: a 3.6-litre in the Carrera and a 3.8-litre in the S, the latter producing 355bhp and 295lb ft.
Paired with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, and with PASM as standard, the Carrera S delivered a 0-62mph time of around five seconds and a top speed of 179mph.
