Some cars are all about their heart – the engine.

And that’s very true of this Maserati GranCabrio.

Why? Because the F136 Ferrari-Maserati V8 lurking under the bonnet of this GranCabrio is, in anyone’s book, an absolute gem.

It’s so damn wonderful that classing it as an engine – merely a means of motivating a car – is dumbing things down.
Sure, it moves you along, and very well ­indeed, too – this being the later 4.7-litre V8 with 440hp and 361 lb ft of torque.

But a F136 V8 with the cross-plane crank arrangement should really be thought of as a musical instrument.

It sounds sonorous from idle all the way to its spine-shimmering 7,500rpm red line.
That’s not to say this GranCabrio is a one-trick pony.
