Officially presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1978, the Renault 5 Turbo was born of an ambitious program to design a rally car capable of competing at the highest international level.
Although it took on the silhouette of the popular city car, it was radically different: rear mid-engine architecture, wider track, radically modified bodywork and turbocharged engine.
Designed under the direction of Jean Terramorsi and developed at Dieppe by Alpine, the R5 Turbo was homologated in Group 4 in 1980.
Equipped with a Cléon-Fonte 1,397 cm³ engine with Garrett T3 turbocharger, it develops around 160 bhp in its road version, and much more in competition configuration.
