It's easy to understand why the Renault 4 CV was such a success.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, it was the first completely new affordable French car.

Unveiled at the 1946 Salon de l'Automobile, held under the glass roof of the Grand Palais, it featured a simple, clever design that made the most of its limited size: the engine and transmission were at the rear, leaving the platform completely free for the occupants, allowing four people to be accommodated quite comfortably.

With its tumbled engine, it was a lightweight car capable of reaching 90 km/h.

Affordable for those of modest means, the 4CV became a true symbol of freedom.
