Conceived during the Second World War and developed in secrecy by Renault engineers Fernand Picard, Edmond Serre and their colleagues, the little 4CV rear-engined saloon was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1946.

Series production commenced the following year and the 4CV quickly became a symbol of France's return to prosperity and affordable motoring.

With its rear-mounted four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and lightweight monocoque construction, the 4CV was technically unconventional for its class.
