A l’instar d’Amilcar, Salmson était un constructeur inventif, innovant et particulièrement compétitif en course automobile.
L’une des avancées technologique de l’entreprise se fit au début des années 1920 alors qu’Emile Petit conçut, sur la demande d’André Lombard, un nouveau moteur 4 cylindres à 8 soupapes en tête commandées par 4 tiges verticales.
Bien en avance sur ses concurrents, ce petit moteur culbuté de 1100 cm3 offrit à Salmson un véritable palmarès au sein des courses de cyclecar.
Les Salmson AL et VAL étaient nés.
La VAL était disponible en plusieurs carrosseries disposées sur deux cadres distinct, l’un fermé, plus lourd mais plus solide était proposé sur les carrosseries 4 places de tourisme, l’autre ouvert, plus léger était destiné aux versions sport 2 ou trois places.
