C'est donc très tôt que Salmson va proposer des mécaniques culbutées tandis que la plupart des concurrents n'ont que des moteurs à soupapes tristement latérales.
Victoire après victoire, la marque s'est taillée un beau palmarès dans la catégorie cyclecar grâce à cette mécanique.
André Lombard étant l'instigateur de ce modèle, il est baptisé AL en version cyclecar et VAL en version voiturette.
La voiturette était disponible en deux longueurs de châssis : un à cadre fermé, dédié aux carrosseries à 4 places de tourisme, et un autre, à cadre ouvert et plus léger pour les versions sport à 2 ou 3 places.
