Fondé en 1901, Berliet est à l’origine un fabriquant d’automobiles, le premier bus arrive en 1906, suivi du premier camion en 1910, mais les utilitaires sont toujours restés marginaux chez Berliet bien que représentant les 2/3 de la production nationale d’utilitaires.

Pendant la première guerre mondiale, Berliet devient un producteur de camions pour soutenir l’effort de guerre et se fait remarquer dans cette activité, mais dans l’immédiat d’après guerre,

la quasi-totalité des usines Berliet sont réorientées vers l’automobile.

A cette époque, la gamme automobile de Berliet va de la petite 8CV Type VIL à la grosse 22Cv.

Mais c’est la 8CV qui remporte le plus de succès, Berliet développe une évolution qui apparaît

en 1932 : c’est la 944 pour 9Cv, 4 cylindres, 4 vitesses.
