DE DION BOUTON Type E «Vis-à-vis» Brevetée en juin 1899 et présentée au Salon de la même année, la première voiturette à pétrole De Dion et Bouton remportera un énorme succès.
Elle peut être considérée comme la première voiture française fabriquée en série.
Il s'agissait, pour la marque, d'une belle évolution après sa période «vapeur» suivie des tricycles et quadricycles à pétrole.
La marque du Comte était très innovante du point de vue de la mécanique; son révolutionnaire petit moteur permettait de hauts régimes et donnait un excellent rendement.
Il permit à des centaines marques de pouvoir lancer leur fabrication parmi lesquelles Delage ou Renault qui existe toujours! Les voiturettes De Dion de cette époque possèdent un moteur positionné transversalement à l'arrière.
Le châssis tubulaire est très léger.
La transmission se fait par un pont suspendu type De Dion.
Ce système de transmission a été breveté en 1896.
