The Alpina B3 based on the BMW E46 3 Series was introduced in 1999 as Alpina’s refined, high-performance interpretation of BMW’s already capable sports saloon and coupe.
Built in Buchloe, the B3 was designed to sit between the standard BMW models and the more aggressive M3, offering a blend of luxury, exclusivity, and everyday usability rather than outright track focus.
Early versions used a 3.3-litre straight-six engine derived from BMW’s M52 unit, extensively reworked by Alpina with a modified crankshaft, pistons, and engine management to produce strong mid-range torque and smooth power delivery.
Later, the B3 S increased displacement to 3.4 litres and further enhanced performance.
