Enlarged to 3.2 litres, the newcomer’s straight-six DOHC engine featured a re-programmed engine management system, freer-flowing exhaust system, revised combustion chambers and Mahle lightweight pistons etc.
Developing some 265bhp and 330Nm, it could be allied to either six-speed manual or five-speed Switchtronic automatic transmission.
Reputedly capable of 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds and over 162mph, Alpina offered the B3 3.2 in saloon, coupe, convertible or estate guises all of which benefited from revised springing, stiffer anti-roll bars and bigger brakes.
Only in production for three years, Alpina sold a mere 342 B3 3.2s making them far, far scarcer than BMW’s contemporary M3.
