The initial model line-up consisted of 250 S, 250 SE, and 300 SE.

Engines for the new car were carried over from the previous generation but enlarged and refined.

The 250 S was the entry level vehicle fitted with a 2496cc straight-six M108 engine, delivering 130 bhp, which accelerated the car to 60mph in 12 seconds, and gave a top speed of 120 mph.

The 250 SE featured an identical straight-six, but with a six-plunger fuel injection system.

Approximately 130,000 of the SE models were built during the first two years of the W108's existence.
