It was the first Jaguar Saloon to feature independent rear suspension, while the front had the proven set-up of double wishbones and coil springs.
At launch it was powered by a 3.8-litre version of the company's ubiquitous straight-six, DOHC XK engine.
However, upgrades for 1964 included: an increase in capacity of the standard engine to 4.2-litres and a new all-synchromesh, four-speed manual gearbox.
Braking was by discs all-round and power-assisted steering was standard.
By the time of the 1966 London Motorshow, the range had been renamed 420G, some 5,763 of which were built before the model was superseded by the XJ6.
According to the accompanying heritage certificate this home market example was supplied new by Henly's, London, on 13th November 1963.
