Lorsque Ford Motor Company s’est désengagé de la production de la Pantera en 1974, Alessandro de Tomaso a repris la pleine propriété de sa marque.
Il a alors continué à fabriquer des Pantera, en plus petit nombre, mais en faisant constamment évoluer leurs capacités et leurs détails stylistiques.
C’est au Salon de l’automobile de Turin en 1980 que la GT5 fit ses débuts.
