Replacing the traditional separate chassis, unitary construction arrived at Austin in 1954 in the form of the A40 and A50 Cambridge models, which were powered by B-Series engines of 1.2 and 1.5 litres respectively but otherwise almost identical apart from a higher final drive ratio in the latter's case.

The A40 version did not survive post-1956 and the following year the original A50 Cambridge was updated with a usefully bigger boot and little add-on tail fins, becoming the A55.

The engine was BMC's 1.5-litre B-Series unit, top speed was 75mph and the car cost £856.

However, this was but a short-lived model soon to be replaced by the new Farina-styled Cambridge.

In the late owner's possession since at least 1977, this A55 Cambridge appears complete and although it has straight body panels there is some surface corrosion evident.
