Après avoir importé des automobiles de marques françaises en Italie durant deux années, Cesare Isotta s'associa aux trois frères Vincenzo, Oreste et Antonio Fraschini, pour créer la société Isotta-Fraschini en 1902 à Milan.
La société prit rapidement de l'envergure et quatre années plus tard, la marque était la seconde grande firme automobile en Italie.
En 1908, une Isotta-Fraschini remporte la Targa-Florio.
Au long des années, le quatre cylindres gagna en cylindrée et en puissance.
En 1912, un tout nouveau moteur 8 cylindres en ligne est dévoilé.
Mais survient la première guerre mondiale, durant laquelle, comme bon nombre de marques européennes, Isotta-Fraschini concentra sa production sur les moteurs d'avions.
Après l'armistice, lorsque le Type 8 est présenté en 1919, c'est le premier huit cylindres en ligne à entrer en production de série.
Avec 10 ch pour 5,9 litres, le Type 8 était une des voitures les plus puissantes proposées sur le marché.
