Constructeur automobile depuis 1904, Delaunay-Belleville était déjà une puissante firme industrielle réputée pour ses chaudières marines qu'elle vendait à la Marine nationale et même à la Royal Navy.

Louis Delaunay embaucha l'ingénieur Marius Barbarou, ancien collaborateur de Benz et de Clément, pour concevoir ses automobiles dont le premier type apparut au Salon de Paris de décembre 1904.

Dès le début, les automobiles Delaunay-Belleville affichèrent une qualité exceptionnelle et, en quelques années, la marque se forgea une réputation qui la mit à parité avec Daimler, Panhard et Rolls-Royce.

Caractérisés par leur radiateur et leur capot ronds, la plupart des modèles qui reçurent des carrosseries de grande classe furent conduits par des chauffeurs.

Le constructeur Fernand Charron déclara un jour : « On ne conduit pas soi-même sa Delaunay – simplement, ça ne se fait pas ».
