Très rapidement, elle allait dominer le championnat du monde et rafler deux titres, en 1985 et 1986, malgré la concurrence très sévère d'Audi et Lancia.
Le projet Groupe B avait été annoncé par Jean Todt fin 1981, pour un premier engagement au Tour de Corse 1984 ! Le cahier des charges était simple : la voiture devait ressembler au modèle phare de la marque de Sochaux, la 205, et pour le reste : ne pas dépasser 950 kg, avoir un moteur central turbocompressé et 4 roues motrices, comme l'Audi.
