En 1973 et 1974, l'usine de Zuffenhausen avait essayé et engagé en compétition à titre expérimental des voitures prédécesseurs directs des coupés 935 qui connurent le succès dès leur première course.
Les 935-76 furent extrêmement allégées.
En partant d'une coque nue renforcée de 930, les capots avant et arrière, les portes et les ailes sont en matière plastique GFK.
A l'avant, le grand spoiler et les deux ailes sont réunis en un seul élément amovible.
