Si les précédentes Matra sport (à carrosserie en plastique et moteur central arrière) avaient, pour des raisons économiques, péché par une regrettable sous-motorisation face au potentiel du châssis, la Murena tenta d'y remédier en proposant au choix les moteurs à arbre à cames en tête Simca-Chrysler de 1,6 et 2,2 litres donnant 92 ou 118 ch en série.
