In 1968, Citroën buys Maserati, then in financial difficulty...

The firm with the chevron is looking for a noble engine for the future SM: a 2.7l V6 is developed by Giulio Alfieri to meet these specifications.

To relaunch Maserati, it was decided to upgrade this block to 3 l, to create the future sports car of the range: the Merak, based on the Bora.
The Merak's V6 may be smaller than the Bora's V8, but it's more economical and better balanced.

Coupled with Citroën equipment (steering, hydropneumatic suspension, etc.), the Merak was a solid performer for its time! Success was not enough to keep Maserati afloat, and it was sold to Alejandro de Tomaso in 1976.

7 years later, the Merak was discontinued after 1,800 units had been produced.
