Présentée en 1984, l'Alpine baptisée GTA (pour Grand Tourisme Alpine) succède à la version A310 dont l'air de famille est évident.
Elle reprend la conception de ses devancières, à savoir un châssis poutre sur lequel est greffée une coque en matériaux synthétiques ainsi qu'un moteur V6 décliné en deux versions (atmosphérique et turbo) installé en porte-à-faux arrière.
Elaborées par Heuliez, les lignes de cette nouvelle Alpine offrent une aérodynamique exceptionnelle avec un Cx (coefficient de trainée) de 0,28 et un Scx (coefficient de pénétration) de 0,48.
Alpine entend présenter une gamme complète de la GTA.
A commercer par la V6 GT, puis la V6 Turbo l'année suivante et l'Europa Cup conçue pour les courses monotypes organisées en lever de rideau des Grand-Prix européens de Formule 1.
Renault et Alpine songent également à exporter la version GTA USA dérivée des V6 Turbo, mais y renoncera dès lors que la marque au losange se retirera du marché américain en 1987.
