Lancée en 1975, la Ferrari 308 et son moteur de 3 litres rencontre un important succès, notamment grâce à son apparition dans la série Magnum.
Cependant Ferrari n'oublie pas son marché national, qui se trouve lourdement taxé sur les cylindrées de plus de 2 litres.
