Tell Me More

The Thomas Flyer Model K, produced by the E.R. Thomas Motor Company of Buffalo, New York, is most famous for winning the grueling 1908 New York to Paris Race.

Six cars of various nationalities started the race in New York. The Thomas Flyer was the only American entry. After traversing the United States, the team crossed to Japan by boat, then to Russia.

The race continued across Europe, with the Thomas Flyer ultimately arriving in Paris first, after 169 days. The victory cemented the car's place in automotive history.

The Model K was a powerful and reliable machine for its time. It was equipped with a six-cylinder engine.

While the E.R. Thomas Motor Company produced other models, there isn't a direct "successor" to the Model K in a traditional sense. The company faced financial difficulties and was eventually sold.

A little-known fact: During the race, the Thomas Flyer team faced numerous challenges, including navigating treacherous roads and dealing with language barriers. At one point in Siberia, they were running low on fuel and resorted to using wood alcohol obtained from a local source to keep the car running.
