Oakland, founded in 1907, became part of General Motors in 1909.
The brand aimed to bridge the gap between affordable and luxury cars.
One little-known fact: Oakland briefly produced a car called the "Pontiac" as a companion model in 1926.
The Pontiac was so popular it eventually eclipsed Oakland, leading to Oakland's demise in 1931, and Pontiac's rise.
