NSU, initially known for knitting machines, ventured into motorcycles and then cars.
Their innovative Wankel rotary engine in the NSU Spider and Ro 80 was groundbreaking, yet reliability issues led to high warranty costs.
Volkswagen acquired NSU in 1969, merging it with Auto Union to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG, later shortened to Audi. The NSU name disappeared after 1977.
Few know that NSU was the first to mass-produce a Wankel-powered car, the Spider, in 1964. This bold move, though ultimately problematic, showcased NSU's engineering ambition and willingness to push boundaries.
