Mathis, a French car maker, was founded in 1904 by Émile Mathis.
Mathis initially assembled cars, later producing their own designs.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Mathis was France's fourth largest auto manufacturer.
A lesser-known story: Émile Mathis partnered with Ettore Bugatti in 1904 to build cars bearing the name "Mathis-Hermes," before their eventual split.
