The Ford Mustang Boss 429 was born out of necessity. Ford wanted to race in NASCAR, and to do so, they needed to produce a street-legal version of their 429 engine.

Thus, the Boss 429 Mustang was created. It was a beast of a car, though factory ratings understated its true power.
