Tell Me More

The Alfa Romeo GTA, a sporty coupe, debuted in 1965. It was a competition-focused version of the Giulia Sprint GT. Autodelta, Alfa's racing division, developed it.

The "A" in GTA stands for "Alleggerita," meaning lightweight in Italian. Alfa Romeo achieved this by using aluminum for the outer body panels instead of steel.

One lesser-known story involves the GTA's racing success. Despite its lightweight design, some privateer teams found creative ways to further reduce weight. They replaced glass windows with plexiglass. Some even drilled holes in non-structural parts of the chassis. This was all in pursuit of a competitive edge on the track.

The Alfa Romeo GTAm was a later, more powerful development of the GTA. The Alfetta GTV eventually succeeded the GTA.
