Tell Me More
The Sunbeam Tiger, produced from 1964-1967, was a high-performance V8 version of the Sunbeam Alpine roadster, born from a collaboration between Rootes Group and Carroll Shelby.
Shelby was initially contracted to develop the Alpine, resulting in the Tiger. Rootes then contracted with Jensen Motors to handle production.
Chrysler acquired Rootes in 1967, and due to the Chrysler/Shelby association, the Tiger was discontinued.
There was no direct successor.
Did you know that Ian Garrad, Rootes' West Coast Sales Manager, played a crucial role in the Tiger's creation? He recognized the Alpine's potential with a V8 and secretly approached Shelby, bypassing Rootes' management initially. Garrad's initiative was pivotal in bringing the Tiger to life.
