The Mk1 Ford Escort was introduced in the UK at the end of 1967, debuting at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968.

It replaced the long-running and successful Anglia.

The Escort quickly became a dominant force in rally racing, eventually earning a reputation as one of the most successful rally cars of all time.

The Ford Works team was nearly unbeatable in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with perhaps the Escort's most notable victory being the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, driven by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola.

This triumph inspired the creation of the Escort Mexico special-edition road versions.

In addition to the Mexico, Ford developed the RS1600, which featured a Kent engine block paired with a 16-valve Cosworth cylinder head.

These models boasted higher-performance engines, sports suspension, and strengthened bodyshells, making them ideal for rallying.

Ford also introduced the RS2000 model as a more reliable alternative to the RS1600.
