The Baur Karosserie (German for coachbuilder) has been around since 1910 and is mostly remembered for its unconventional ways of transforming regular cars into cabriolets.
Baur Cabriolets aren’t plagued by structural problems as they retain the saloon’s roofline, B and C pillars.
This was the USA market was having issues with full convertibles, so they were contracted by BMW to make topless 2002s, and decided to fit their Cabriolets with an integrated quasi-rollcage.
And since that was in place, it made sense to leave the A, B and C pillars around it intact as well.
This was how a Baur Cabriolet came to be.
It was replaced in 1975 by the E21 iteration of 3-series.
It is believed only some 260 RHD were produced and the number left on the road is in single figures.
This wonderful example has MOT history going back to 1984 at 78,089 miles, it turned the clock in 1987.
