Some of the most entertaining automobiles in motoring history have been the maddest ideas.

To wit, the Lamborghini LM002, a beefy, Hummer-style sport utility vehicle with sharp-edged industrial styling, equipped with a Countach-sourced 450-horsepower V-12 fed from a 45-gallon fuel tank, delivering its power through a five-speed manual gearbox and two-speed transfer case to wheels shod in massive Pirelli run-flat tires.

It could climb over anything imaginable, while carrying four passengers in bucket seats wrapped in fine leather and surrounded by glossy wood veneer trim.

Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show of 1986, the LM002 set faces agog, and in the next nine years would sell 328 copies.

Today it is considered—and rightfully so—to be a pioneer of the ultra-luxury sport utility vehicle, the kind that is now the bread-and-butter for most European manufacturers.

It remains a powerful machine, and its utter charisma has never quite been equaled.
