After making his grand prix debut in 1972, Jody Scheckter would not race full-time in the top flight for another two years.

That allowed the South African to split his time between a variety of categories, including heading to America to contest the SCCA L&M Formula 5000 season in 1973.

While F5000 did not carry quite the same profile as F1, the use of large-capacity V-8s and well-developed tyres meant there was little to split the two series in terms of outright car performance.

Utilising design aspects of the McLaren M21, the T101 marked the first in-house design for Trojan, having spent much of the previous decade constructing race cars for McLaren.

Aboard the model, which mates a 5-litre Chevrolet engine to a five-speed Hewland DG300 gearbox, Scheckter made an immediate impact.

He finished 2nd in the opening round at Riverside before winning the next three events back-to-back at Laguna Seca, Michigan International Speedway, and Mid-Ohio.
