As soon as the revolutionary type-993 Porsche 911 Carrera was introduced for the 1994 model year, enthusiasts were clamoring for a Turbo version.

The anticipation would persist until 1995, when the new 911 Turbo Coupé was unveiled as a 1996 model.

Though it was part of the last generation of the 911 to feature an air-cooled flat-six engine, the type-993 was the first 911 Turbo with all-wheel drive and the first variant equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

Its 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six was a detuned version of the engine used in the rear-wheel-drive, track-focused 911 GT2 and produced 402 brake horsepower.

A Werksleistungssteigerung (“factory performance increase”) option package, “WLS 1” for short, used remapped engine management software and higher boost pressure to achieve 424 brake horsepower.

Those and other upgrades would come standard on the 911 Turbo S launched for the 1997 model year.
