Upon making its debut in 2001, the Porsche 911 GT2 was the fastest, most ferocious road-legal variant of the type-996 911.

Its twin-turbo 3.6-litre engine boasted 462 horsepower, 10 per cent more power than the contemporary 911 Turbo, thanks to a higher boost limit, a larger intercooler, and a less-restrictive exhaust.

The GT2 also featured rear-wheel drive, versus the 911 Turbo’s all-wheel drive, making it a better driver’s car to some.

Honed for the circuit, the GT2 also eschewed the Turbo’s retractable sunroof, one of its front radiators and automatic climate-control system reduced weight by around 100 kilograms.

Both lighter and more powerful, the GT2 eclipsed the already dazzling 911 Turbo in terms of performance.

The exterior featured the 911 Turbo’s bodywork but with a revised nose and larger rear wing for improved aerodynamics.

Inside, the GT2 was a true two-seater, with the 911’s traditional rear demi-seats being replaced with carpeting.
